Some Important
Questions:
What is the purpose of this group?
This is a discussion forum for bed and breakfast innkeepers.
Expected topics of discussion include (but are not limited to):
- past and current experiences with guests, associations, vendors, or other innkeepers
- referrals and recommendations to associations or vendors
- suggestions and tips for innkeeping
- experiences with guidebooks and other B&B travel resources
- discussions on food preparation, amenities, pricing, licenses,
certifications, marketing, etc.
- and just general collaboration and comradery.

Who are the moderators of this group? How are
they involved in the B&B industry?
- Frances Walker operates Sassafras Ridge B&B, a small 3-bedroom inn just south of
Carbondale Illinois since October 1995. Frances is active in the Illinois Bed & Breakfast
Association, where she is responsible for the organization's Internet marketing (and her husband Myers
does the quarterly newsletter "Inn-Volved").
She has been enthusiastically marketing her B&B on the Internet from the
beginning and has encouraged other innkeepers to do the same.
Frances collects Hall teapots, and when she has time,
makes quilt tops (although she lets somebody else do the quilting!).
Frances describes her interest in the Innkeeping discussion list:
"I like the discussion list because innkeeping can sometimes be a rather lonely
business, especially if you're the only B&B in the
county, as I am. Being able to post a note and say 'where do you buy...' or 'how do you handle
the problem of...' and get answers from a number of more experienced innkeepers from all over
the country in priceless."
- Stephan M. Spencer is the creator and webmaster of InnSite (http://www.innsite.com),
a worldwide directory of bed & breakfasts, country inns, and small luxury
hotels; and InnFinder.com (http://www.innfinder.com),
a search engine of all major bed & breakfast directories, individual
inn home pages, RSOs, and B&B associations. His "day job" is running a web
site design firm, Internet Concepts (http://www.netconcepts.com/),
which creates and manages web sites for mid- to large-size corporations
and associations.
What do moderators do anyway? Why is this list
moderated?
Moderators approve messages for posting to the group. This helps manage
traffic and the quality of the postings. With a moderated list, "inappropriate
posts" are rejected before the group subscribers have to read them.
What is proper etiquette for this group?
It's basically the same as for any other group:
- Use informative subject lines.
If you're posting about a specific thing, include what it is in the Subject
field (e.g. "How to deal with loud guests?" at the start of a Subject line for an article
requesting suggestions for dealing with guests who are disruptive to the innkeeper and other guests).
- Answer people's questions
thoughtfully and in an unbiased way (i.e. adding value to the group).
- Feel free to provide a short
(under four lines) "signature" telling your name, inn name, email address, phone
number, fax number, and web site address (if applicable) at the end of your message.
- Don't get angry if someone doesn't like your comments; listen to them and
try to answer their points. Remember, the purpose of this group is for
us to discuss ideas, opinions, suggestions, etc.
What's an "inappropriate post?"
An inappropriate post is a message that doesn't adhere to the guidelines of
this group (also known as a "charter").
Inappropriate posts would include:
- advertising. This group allows innkeepers to help other innkeepers.
This is NOT a forum for advertising
and commercial interests; such posts will not be welcome. If you have a
product or a tour, please post your message in rec.travel.marketplace or
other locations.
- inappropriate behavior. Inappropriate posts, spamming, advertising, profanity,
derogatory or offensive remarks directed towards an individual, group, race
or class. In other words, be respectful!
