Benachi House is historically significant, authentically restored and furnished, and conveniently located for the visitor. Here you will find the quintessential charm of classic New Orleans in a warm, relaxed, secure atmosphere. Walk or drive to the nearby French Quarter. Or take readily available taxis, or public transit. You are welcomed by hosts Jim Derbes and Cecilia Rau, who are pleased to offer you a tour of the Honor-Award winning restoration and its spacious ground, and suggestions for dining, sightseeing and entertainment. Jim is a lawyer and University Instructor with an extensive background in historic preservation. Cecilia is an insurance broker. Both are life-long residents of New Orleans who live on the premises. The Greek Revival house was constructed on the Bayou Road in 1858 for Nicholas M. Benachi - cotton broker, Consul of Greece and a founder of our city's Greek Orthodox Congregation. Bayou Road is the Historic New Orleans Trace, a trail on the Esplanade Ridge (now a National Register Historic District) that connected the Mississipi River with the bayous and their environs. The house retains its original details: fourteen foot ceilings, black marble mantles, exuberant chandeliers; Greek key doorways; and heart pine floors. The furnishing displays the handiwork of New Orleans' notable 19th century cabinetmakers. Imagine you have turned back the clock to the halycon days of old New Orleans: elegant and unhurried.
