Francis Malbone House, Newport, Rhode Island

Our historic Inn was built in 1760 for Colonel Francis Malbone, who made his fortune as a shipping merchant. His fleet was moored in the Newport Harbor, across from his Colonial Mansion. Legend holds that the Colonel once had an underground tunnel from the house to the waterfront, through which he smuggled goods to avoid paying duty to the King.

Years later, after seizure by the British Army, the house was used to store gold, thus earning the nickname "Treasure House".

The mansion was returned to the Malbone Family in the early 1800's when it was occupied by the Colonel's son, also named Francis Malbone, who was a United States Senator.

Come spend the day discovering Newport and then return to the charm and serenity of our historic home and beautiful gardens. We are located in the heart of Newport, so you are able to park your car in our lot and discover our city on foot.

We trust you will have a lasting experience and your first stay will be the first of many.
