Seven Wives Inn, Saint George, Utah

Seven Wives Inn consists of two neighboring pioneer homes in St. George’s historical district. Edwin G. Wooley, who build the larger house in 1873, hid polygamists in the attic via a secret door, after polygamy was outlawed in 1882. One of these polygamists was Benjamin F. Johnson, an ancestor of the innkeepers, who really did have seven wives, hence the name Seven Wives Inn.

The house next door, build by George Whitehead in 1883, is called the President’s House because it hoisted some of the early presidents of the Mormon Church.

There are thirteen-guest rooms in the inn, all with private baths all decorated in antiques. Some have fireplaces and most have outside doors to downstairs porches or upstairs balconies.

Each house has a parlor with fireplace for guests enjoyment. St. George is located in Utah’s “Dixie” on I-15 just 120 miles northeast of Las Vegas and 300 miles south of Salt Lake City. The winters are very mild, making visits to nearby Zion National Park a year-round pleasure. Because of the warm winters, St. George boasts nine golf courses and tennis courts are plentiful. There are many historic sites, ghost towns and picnic, hiking or biking areas in or near St. George and the scenery all around is inspiring.
