1. How do I join InnSite?

  1. On this web site is a printable application form. Print out a copy (requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader), fill it out, and sign it. To save $25, make sure to follow step C.

  2. If you want photographs with your listing, include your original photos with the application form and a check covering the $10 per photograph fee. (Slides, transparancies, or any print materials are not acceptable! If you have slides or transparancies, you can take them to your local photo developer and get prints made from them. We will now accept scanned or digital photos, see Guidelines for Submitting Photographs for information on image formats and scanner settings.) Please read the Guidelines for Submitting Photographs before selecting photos. You may include as many photographs as you want. (More than 5 tends to look odd on the page) Make sure to send $10 for each photograph to cover the cost of image scanning.

  3. Connect to the InnSite web site*, select the "Add Entry" option, then fill in the form-- an online version of the printed application you completed in step 1. Be sure to assign your entry a password (make one up that you will remember) This is important: if you do not assign a password to your entry, you will not be able to make changes to it.

If you cannot access the web site (http://www.innsite.com/), include an extra $25 with your application form, and we will do the data entry for you.

  4. There is a space on the application form, near the top right, to put your home page and email address. The addresses will appear as hyperlinks in your listing. Please keep your information current, and ensure all your links and images are correct.

You are welcome to link to InnSite from your home page.

I want my own customized home page. Can you help me with that? Unfortunately, that's not a service that we offer to individual inns. offers web site development services to associations and medium to large-size businesses. For an individual home page, try asking on the Innkeeping email discussion list for recommendations of good web page designers.

  5. After submitting the application online, note the number that your inn is assigned. It will start with an "A" and will be the last part in your inn's URL. Write this number at the top right of the application form where it says "A__________"

  6. Your listing will not appear in our online directory straight away. It will be held for one to four days pending approval. Once your listing is approved it will appear online immediately even if we have not yet received your printed application form in the mail. If your submission is rejected we will notify you and let you know the reasons for rejection. The most common reason is that the inn already has a listing with us.

  7. Now mail your signed application form (from step 1), photos (optional) and check or money order if applicable (payable to Netconcepts, LLC) to:
    1. Netconcepts, LLC
      InnSite
      2820 Walton Commons West
      Suite 123
      Madison, WI 53718

  8. Why do you require the photographs and descriptive text to be original and solely for use in InnSite, and that I assign copyright of this material to you? This is because it gives me legal protection in case someone (like a competitor) wants to download my whole database of inns and get a head start on their own directory. If I possess a registered copyright, I can sue them for statutory infringement if necessary. Copyright assignment is commonplace in book publishing: authors are usually required to assign copyright to their publisher before the publisher agrees to publish the book.

What if I don't agree with what it says in the small print at the end of the application about copyrights? If something in the small print really bothers you, then cross off the small print that you don't agree with and we'll review on a case-by-case basis.

2. Making changes

It is your responsibility to keep your entry up-to-date. This would mean periodically checking the accuracy of the entry in InnSite and making appropriate changes using the online Edit Entry option. Click on "Edit" on the menu bar on the home page (http://www.innsite.com/). Type a word or phrase that is partof your listing. Your inn's name, or the owner's last name, are good choices. On the list of search results, select your inn and click on "EDIT" next to your inn name. Make changes and additions to the fill-in form, put your password in the TOP box only, then click on the "Submit" button. If you have forgotten your password, click on the "I forgot" button at the top of the Edit page. It will be sent to your inn's email address.

If you originally got added by filling in a print application form and mailing it in, and now you are online and want to make changes, contact uswith a password request. Include your name, your inn's name, and your inn's URL on InnSite. (http://www.innsite.com/inns/A000001.html, for example)

3. How long does it take for my listing/photograph to get added/updated on InnSite?

Additions, when inputted by yourself online, are made active within aweek. When sent by mail, they can take up to a month. Updates to a current listing, when done online, happen instantaneously. Photographs are added in large batches. The batches are processed every month. We rarely lose photographs. If you do not see your photo, be patient. It will be added as part of the next update.

4. What's different about InnSite compared to the other online B&B directories?

What is your background as creator of InnSite?

I set up the internationally recognized WWW Server for Virology (a Top 5% Web Site), a teaching and research resource for the study of viruses while I was in a graduate program in Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I now have a Master's degree and am pursuing a career in the area of Internet technology. Mostly I consult for companies that wish to get on the Internet. I have presented papers at international symposia such as the Second International World Wide Web Conference and the Electronic Publishing and the Information Superhighway conference.

How did you get started with InnSite?

I began working closely with the WBBA (Wisconsin B&B Assoc.) in January 1995 and had developed a "prototype" which we showcased at the Wisconsin Governor's Conference on Tourism March 5-7. We received many positive responses at the Conference and again presented the directory at the WBBA annual conference in April, where it got rave reviews from all the members in attendance. WBBA mailed out my B&B Directory application form to their members, then these forms were then returned to their Executive Assistant, who inputted the descriptions and sent me a disk along with all of the applications.

What do you hope to accomplish with InnSite?

I hope to make this Directory a valuable tourism resource on the Internet, and a cooperative effort among innkeepers. Eventually, I'd like to also offer online room reservations through this Directory.

Has your B&B directory been mentioned in the press?

InnSite (The Internet Directory of Bed & Breakfasts) has been mentioned in a number of newsletters, including: innkeeping (PAII's newsletter), INNMarketing, Kansas Assoc. newsletter, Wyoming Assoc. (WHOA) newsletter, Pennsylvania Assoc. newsletter, Ohio Assoc. newsletter, Ontario Assoc. newsletter, Oregon Assoc. newsletter, Arkansas Assoc. newsletter, and Illinois Assoc. newsletter. If there are others that I've missed, please email me and let me know!

5. Volunteering

I need volunteers! In order for me to offer it for free I need your assistance with disseminating the application forms, with data entry, and with keeping the information up-to-date. Here's what I need from you:

What's in it for me if I help?

Ok, I want to help! How do I get started?

Contact us!

6. Why are you providing this service for free?*

Because I thoroughly enjoy the "B&B experience." I think this Directory is an idea whose time has come and a very fitting use of the Internet. Only by providing a quality service at a low cost can we hope to have a comprehensive B&B Directory on the Internet.

* It's free if you enter your listing online and include no photos.

How can you offer this service for free?

I have a server already on the Internet so there is no additional cost for me to have this Directory residing on the server. The real cost for me is in my time. That's where you come in!
