[Fwd: Re: innkeeping: AAA ratings]

I'm resending this message because my provider had problems last night
and I suspect that my message was lost. If you all get more than one, I
apologize

The flaw in the AAA system is simply that they equate amenities with a
definition of quality. One of the finest motels I ever stayed in on the
Oregon Coast with a beautiful view aof a scenic bay was only one star
even though you could have eaten off the floors, they provided fresh
flowers in every room and had a wine and cheese party in the evening.

My complaint with AAA is that they won't consider us for inclusion
because we only have three rooms. Since we are entirely owner operated
our limitation allows us to provide a high level of personalized service
to all of our guests at a reasonable cost. I have a holistic view of
staying at a B&B. It is the entire experience whic is important and many
small items make that experience. In general AAA is more focused on bean
counting ie light bulb wattage, etc. Perhaps it is not reasonable to
expect an organization like AAA to be responsive to the needs and
idiosyncracies of a diverse lodging group like B&Bs.

[MODERATOR: Actually, I definitely agree with some of what you say,
Gilbert. It may not be reasonable for us to think that AAA could ever
address our industry with the same eye in which they view hotels/motels.
However, we have worked very hard with AAA over the past five years and
they have made major modifications - for a 100-year-organization with more
than 37 million members - specifically for our industry. While true that
each inspector does have his/her own peculiarities, we have made major
inroads.
AAA simply may not be for everyone. They do have their "hoops" to jump
through, that is absolutely true. And it is true that while "amenities" do
affect diamond ratings, it is not that factor alone for any rating. As I am
sure you are aware, it's a complicated rating system that they use. Have
you read their Lodging Guidelines? It lists everything in detail - and no
single one thing - makes or breaks a rating, unless it is one of the basic
requirements, and in that case a property would probably not be rated at
all. Jo Ann, PAII]
