We have found that for us the best answer is a digital answering machine
that reliably stores return call numbers; we take a printout from our
reservation computer system whenever we leave for more than a day, and
we've made reservations while we are skiing, vacationing on the beach,
or whatever.  The secret is to check messages regularly and answer them
as though you were just "down the street".
