Practice, practice, practice before you tackle your walls even if you are an accomplished artist. The wall texture and background color affects the stencilling technique so it is important to be very familiar with the stencil and paint on a similar surface (not just paper or posterboard). Try covering a piece of drywall with the same color paint on walls or ceiling and work on that to get the proper technique. Also work lightly. With stencilling less is definitely more. Call or write if you need more specific stencil advice. We used the textured wallpaper in our dining room under the chair rail to simulate wainscotting. We chose it because the room already had three different types of wood wainscot (two styles of beaded board and some smooth plywood) plus plain wall. The paper is rather difficult to install so had it done professionally. It didn't entirely disquise the beaded board in one area. We are sorry we didn't do more surface prep with a filler before installing the paper although it is not very noticeable to anyone but us. Good luck. Karen Kulberg Main Street Inn Ste.
