Kate and Joe Bowski, Like so many things, it depends on how you want to use it. I have a Brother 1850MFC that I got from Sam's for about $400. It is cabled to my PC. It does a good job as telephone answerer, and FAX receiver and sender. It does a fair job as a scanner, and copier. I have mine configured so that an incoming FAX never goes to paper, but is stored in the machine until I send it to the PC for saving, trashing, and/or printing. On my 1850 when copying, it is not possible to lighten or darkern to correct for poor originals. For ones or twos in good condition, it is okay, but for more than five pages, I still go to the copy store. I have been satisfied with the scanning and can save in the Paint format used by Windows.
