Tim T. Hagaman, owner and historian, will give a class on the famous for Lincoln County War and New Mexico history. Deputy Marshal Robert Olinger was having his last meal at the hotel on April 28, 1881, the day that his famous prisoner, Billy the Kid, made his escape from the Lincoln County Courthouse. Having heard the gunshot from the jail, Olinger quickly left the hotel to check on his prisoner, and was killed by Billy the Kid as he entered the side yard of the Court House. Today you can eat with Bob Olinger and we open each year to commemorate his last meal on April 28 through October 31. The Wortley dining room serves real mashed potatoes, fruit and waffles from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm seven days a week. The cool adobe Wortley Hotel sits behind a white picket fence down the one-street town from the Old Lincoln County Courthouse. Along the front is a 92-foot porch where guests can relax on rocking chairs while viewing with serenity the quiet beauty of the surrounding hills, mountain peaks and stars. Part of the porch is enclosed for dining and provides a light, warm setting while visiting with guests.
