Eldred Illinois Bed and Breakfast near American Archaeology Museum
This is the ancestral home of John Russell, who was a noted pioneer, writer, and educator.
Charles Dickens came for a visit here in the 1840s. The house was built in 1828 of native limestone, walnut doors and trim, and wide plank oak floors. The huge rock fireplace in the old kitchen is flanked by a large bake oven and a walnut mantle. The house is located at the edge of the Illinois River bluffs and 200 acres of mature woods.
A new cottage-in-the-woods is secluded and luxurious. Designed for one couple or family, it features two baths, two Jacuzzis and a fireplace. It has a cathedral ceiling and wide plank floors. A 10x40 deck with trees growing through it offers a great place to view the river valley and watch the sunset or the horses grazing in the meadows below.
Breakfast is a full meal served family style in front of one of the house's six fireplaces.
This is a beautiful area with the bluffs rising 200 feet above the plain which leads down to the river. In the spring, the tree- covered hills are filled with wild flowers and, in the fall, the colored leaves are a beautiful sight to behold.
