The utopian community of New Harmony has been called the "epicenter" of communitarianism. New Harmony was the site of two of the most significant religious and social experimental communities in the United States. From 1814 when the Harmonists, a religious group led by George Rapp, settled in New Harmony, through 1824 when wealthy Scottish industrialist Robert Owen sought to establish a model social community, the town became a religious, cultural and social center. This tranquil community is still known for achievements in the arts, architecture, education and science.
