Carter House, Silver City, New Mexico
THIS INN IS FOR SALE
The historic house was built in 1906 by Theodore W. Carter and is Queen Anne Colonial Revival in style. The B&B offers four rooms and one suite, each with private bath. The inn has numerous common rooms trimmed in ornate oak woodwork and a large front porch with a wonderful view of the nearby mountains beyond this former Silver mining town.
In addition to the Bed & Breakfast Inn, there is a 22-bed, dormitory style Hostelling International licensed facility on the ground floor. The hostel is ideal for group use and retreats as well as individual travelers.
The atmosphere at the inn is relaxed with an emphasis placed on peace and quiet for the guests. With so much common space provided, guests are able to spread out and enjoy the varied collection of books and magazines in the library or simply sit on the front porch and sip tea and eat home-baked cookies. If one is interested in exploring the surrounding registered historic district, self-guided walking tours are available along with forest service maps and books and cards in the office.
Silver City is located at 5900 feet in elevation and is the gateway to the Gila Wilderness Area and National Forest--an area known for its excellent backpacking, day hiking, rockhounding and birdwatching. Beautiful and varied terrain in all directions from the inn makes for wonderful bicycling both on and off road. The added attractions of nearby hot springs, ghost towns and year-round, sunny, mild weather makes this southwest corner of New Mexico well worth a visit.
