Julian, the site of Southern California's Gold Rush in the late 1800's, is a picturesque mountain village offering visitors a historic sense of California in another time. Apple orchards, country craft shops, fine dining, and seasonal special events attract tourists from all over the world. Although the town once boasted several hotels, the Julian Hotel is the sole survivor and a living monument to mining boom glory.
Albert Robinson, a former slave from Georgia, opened the hotel in 1897. Located on Main Street in the center of town, its authentically restored quaint rooms overlook grassy yards and the spacious veranda. Antique furnishings provide comfort and ambience; and the lobby features a woodburning stove, good books and many games. Guests today enjoy the opportunity to step into the past while being pampered and treated to sumptuous breakfasts and afternoon tea. Every room at the Julian Hotel has a private bath--a great improvement over the "necessary rooms" located at the end of the hall when the hotel was originally built.
