Paige family. Mr. Paige and Fredrick Gates, one of the founders of Harriman and the Temperance movement, had a contest during the building of their houses to see which one could create the most elaborate home. Although Mr. Gates won the contest, his house was later destroyed by fire, leaving Bushrod Hall as a testimony to that time. Its massive oak staircare, imported from Sweden, and exquiste wood detailing make Bushrod Hall a delight to visit. In 1897, the home was purchased by Bushrod W. James for the American Temperance University and because the "Bushrod W. James Hall of Domestic Science, for young ladies. Nancy & Bob Ward purchased the home in June of 1996 and have been lovingly restoring Bushrod Hall to its original splendor.
