Eskdale Bed & Breakfast is on the edge of the West End restaurant and coffee shop district. The area is an old one with a strong Aboriginal tradition and a mix of European and Asian cultures, particularly Greek, Turkish, Arabic and Vietnamese.
The house was built in 1907 and is typical of the high-set wooden houses traditionally built in the northern half of Australia. Its veranda and central hall help to catch the breezes and the high ceilings and tall windows add to the airy quality.
The garden has mainly Australian natives and can be appreciated from the back deck or by walking through it.
Brisbane's major tourist attraction, the Southbank Parklands, are just 1 km away. Here you can walk along the river promenade, swim in the artificial lagoon, eat at the specialist restaurants, see a film or take a catamaran cruise on the river. Also at Southbank is the Cultural Center, housing the Concert Hall, Lyric Theater, Art Gallery, Museum and State Library.
The Southbank campus of Griffith University houses the Conservatorium of Music. The University of Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology both 2 km away on the other side of the Brisbane River.
