NATURAL WONDERS HIGHLIGHT SUMMER FUN FOR FAMILIES PROGRAMS
ON LITTLE ST. SIMONS ISLAND
Spend a summer discovering the wonders of nature with the Summer Fun for Families Programs at The Lodge on Little St. Simons Island. Designed to engage parents and children in hands-on adventures, Summer Fun For Families Programs are recommended for children ages six through 12, however children of all ages are welcome on the Island May - September.
“All of the new summer programs say ‘Get out and about, get your hands dirty, get involved and learn!’,” says Natural Resources Manager Mark Kanyok. Beach Seining is a perfect example. Using a seine net, guests join an Island naturalist to gather a variety of ocean inhabitants and haul them to shore. Out of the net are likely to tumble hermit crabs, shrimp, flounder, blue crabs, a stingray or a squid. As guests bend down to observe these ocean dwellers, the naturalist fascinates both parent and child with stories of each creature’s life, purpose and place in this fragile ecosystem.
Saltmarsh Adventures explore an area commonly referred to as “the nursery of the sea.” So-called because so many species of fish and marine life spend their early years here growing and gaining strength before they head out into the ocean and rivers. Guests pull on a pair of waders and head into the saltmarsh with nets and buckets in hand to search for fiddler crabs, many species of juvenile fish, shrimp, clams, mussels, and snails.
Guests can also examine the fascinating flora and fauna that live just beneath the dock or journey to the freshwater sloughs and ponds where naturalists will guide a narrated tour of the ponds and their inhabitants. Old fashioned, time-tested summer traditions like Clamming and Crabbing are sure to be favorites. Guests take to the creeks and marshes with clam rakes to dig up some of these mucky mollusks; or use crab rigs and dip nets to pull feisty crustaceans from the brackish waters surrounding the Island.
During the Forest Hike, which is lead by an experienced Island naturalist, families traverse Island paths on foot. Explorers have the feeling of discovering a new wilderness in this centuries-old maritime forest. Ghostly gray tendrils of Spanish moss hang from live oaks. Tree frogs, wild turkeys, great egrets, armadillos, European fallow deer, and American alligator are just a few of the local residents who often put in an appearance. While children are imagining that they are on safari, they are learning about the delicate eco-systems that support this habitat.
Stargazing provides a different and nocturnal view of the Island. Without any bright city lights, Little St. Simons Island is virtually enveloped in a blanket of millions of stars that look close enough to touch. Identifying constellations and viewing planets and stars through a telescope provides a rare opportunity, especially for urbanites, to get a close-up look at Mother Nature’s spectacular evening performance.
Tailored just for children, special “Kids Fishing and Kids Horseback Rides” will be offered all summer long. Fish printing, sandcasting and candle making offer wonderful crafts should inclement weather arrive.
SEVEN DAYS OF HEAVEN PACKAGE
