The St. George Hotel, built in 1862 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was one of the tallest and most elegant Hotels in the Mother Lode. Tracey and Mark Berkner purchased the Inn in 1997 and renovated it extensively. The full service restaurant features some of the best dining in the Mother Lode. Volcano had a population of 5,000 in the height of the Gold Rush and was once considered for the State Capital. Today the town has a population of about 100.
