Henry F. Shaffner House, Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Visitors to the Henry F. Shaffner House will find an elegant Queen Anne-style mansion of a bygone era. The Shaffner House required two years, from 1905 to 1907, to build. The house was built for the family of Henry Fries Shaffner, a prominent Winston-Salem businessman. Born in 1867, he grew up to be a commissioner for the town. When Salem and Winston joined, he was on the first board of alderman for the new town. And when his uncle, Col. F.H. Fries started Wachovia Loan and Trust Co. in 1893, he chose Shaffner to be his right-hand man and partner. At the time of his death in 1941, he was Chairman of the Board of Wachovia Bank and Trust Company.
Each room at the Henry F. Shaffner House has been meticulously renovated to reflect the period of the house. The front parlor, with its baby grand piano, is a favorite gathering place for guests. The 2nd floor reading room attracts guests who prefer peace and quiet. Guests also gather in the evenings in the sunroom to enjoy complimentary wine and cheese. The nine guest rooms have a distinct personality. Each of the six large rooms and three suites is well appointed with antiques and reproductions. Central air-conditioning, luxurious robes and towels, telephones and cable TV are only a few of the amenities in each room.
The Shaffner House Restaurant is a collection of small dining rooms, including a glassed-in porch that combine candlelight and a picturesque setting to create a warm, intimate evening. Every meal at the Shaffner House is an extraordinary dining experience. Savor our continental cuisine and our award-winning wine selection to complement any meal.
