Riverside Bed And Breakfast, Bath, Maine

Bath Maine Bed and Breakfast near Bath Iron Works

Reputedly the "most beautiful bed and breakfast in America," the Riverside Bed and Breakfast is housed in an Italianate mansion, originally built circa 1850 for a local shipbuilding tycoon. In 1998 it was purchased by the present owner, Marianna, a professional interior designer. Its restoration took three years, and today it is noted for its high Victorian style and luxurious appointments, including suites with Persian rugs, crystal chandeliers, gilt mirrors, antiques, private boudoir, as well as private library in each room, and king-size beds outfitted with exquisite linen. The inn is noted for its location on what's said to be Maine's aristocratic street as well as its romantic situation atop a bluff overlooking the Kennebec River. (Directly opposite the inn is the site for scenes filmed for the 1999 Universal Pictures' Message in a Bottle, with Kevin Costner and Paul Newman). Most of its suites offer river views and views of Washington Street as far as downtown Bath, a lovely vista over treetops, period roofs and church steeples catering to the romantic in all of us. Breakfast is elaborate and served in European style, with fine table linen and china ware. A stay at the Riverside is to step back in time for an adventure in romance and beauty that is rare to find in today's age.
