Shaker Inn At The Great Stone Dwelling, Enfield, New Hampshire

Unique in all the World

Enfield’s Shaker community was founded in the 1793 by the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, commonly called “Shakers.” Their village, built on a belief of community property, confession of sins, and separation from the rest world was the 9th of 18 Shaker communities to be built in America. Bounded by Mt. Assurance and Mascoma Lake they called their new home the "Chosen Vale." The Enfield Shakers built more than 200 buildings, farmed over 3,000 acres, and educated children in model schools.

The 1841 Great Stone Dwelling, the largest Shaker dwelling ever built, is a unique example of the Shakers’ "family dwellings". Yet, for the time the Shakers upheld many forward-thinking social principles such as equality of the sexes and races, and pacifism.

In 1923, after 130 years of farming, manufacturing, and productive existence, the Enfield Shakers closed their community due to their declining numbers. In 1997 the Enfield Shaker Museum purchased the centerpiece of the Enfield Shaker community, the Great Stone Dwelling. The following year it opened to the public as The Shaker Inn and Restaurant. Today, the entire Enfield Shaker Village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic Village. So when you stay with us, you are helping to preserve a living page of history.
