The Sage Inn was built in 1878 of native limestone as a hostel for travelers along the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails in Kansas. In 1882 it was expanded to include a stage coach station. The Inn is 15 minutes west of Topeka on K-4 Highway, easily accessible from I-70 and I-335. An in-ground stone chamber is on site that served as a hide-out from Indian attack on the stage coach line. It is also thought to have been part of the underground railroad which hid slaves seeking freedom. The Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places. An antique shop is on the premises.
