Introduction

The Francis Hall House (c. 1869)
National Registry Of Historic Places Signature Home
The Traveling Connoisseur's Distinctive & Memorable B&B Experience.

Francis Hall, an upstate New York book seller from Elmira, New York, went to Japan in 1859 to collect material for a book and to serve as correspondent for Horace Greeley's New York Tribune. Hall kept an intensive journal during this period. Seeing the opportunities for commerce in Yokohama, he helped found Walsh, Hall and Co., which became the leading American trading house in Japan. Hall was a shrewd businessman, but more important for us, he was a perceptive recorder of life around him. Hall, a prominent community member and philanthropist, was also an abolitionist. Buried in the cemetery he designed, Woodlawn Cemetery is also the final resting place of another of Elmira's famous residents, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain).

This famous home and its elegant and interesting rooms are yours to enjoy during your stay. The Francis Hall House has been lovingly restored by New York State Historical Painter, W.F. Hopkins and wife, Caroline. An award-winning artist, W.F.'s paintings are done in classic Hudson River style and are in many prominent art collections, museums and even Presidential collections. Guests are always welcome to enjoy the company of the artist in his classic Victorian "Church Street" studio adjoining the main parlor.

"Hall's journal is an extraordinary find, a very valuable and important journal that will be quoted as long as people work on nineteenth -century Japanese history. Hall was a literary craftsman of considerable skill. His words evoke the place and time beautifully."
-Marius B. Jensen, Princeton University

Art, antiques, and books fill the rooms of this elegant and historic landmark. Enjoy the library of art books, memorabilia, photos and items, some of which date to the original and famous owner of the home, Francis Hall (Japan through American Eyes, The Journal of Francis Hall, Kanagawa and Yokohama edited and annotated by F.G. Notehelfer). Enjoy all this marvelous home has to offer including the wisteria-festooned verandah and English gardens off of the artists' studio, where a former First Lady of the United States was hosted by the Hopkins.

A favorite guest spot you can enjoy this secluded setting day or night. Decorated in real antique wicker encased by a profusion of wisteria and lilacs this porch stays cool and is a very private retreat. At night the Japanese globe lanterns high in the ceiling give the verandah a romantic glow. Enjoy games, cards, the company of other travelers or even watch a movie . . .
