When visiting in Northern California make your vacation or getaway more enjoyable by staying in bed and breakfast inns. Northern California is a wonderland of rugged coastline, snow-capped mountains, and some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon country in the world.
When planning a trip there, San Francisco makes a great base of operations. The rail connection from San Francisco International Airport to downtown means you can go directly from your plane to one of hundreds of bed and breakfasts stretching from Fisherman's Wharf to Soma without having to brave traffic. Once there, you should be able to stroll from the door of your bed and breakfast almost anywhere in the city.
For the more adventurous, getting into a car and heading up Interstate 5 through the Sacramento River Valley will put you in scenic Mount Shasta and Lake Shasta Country. There you will be able to take part in a variety of outdoor activities and water sports. Most of the bed and breakfasts in this area are clustered around Redding.
Closer to San Francisco, a trip to Sonoma and Napa Valley through wine country is considered a "must" by most locals. Travel through the vineyards by day, choose from some of the most gourmet restaurants in the world, and then end up at a bed and breakfast in Sonoma, Napa, or one of the small towns nearby.
For those pressed for time and in San Francisco, Marin County makes a great getaway. Mill Valley, Sausalito, and the Northern California coastline towns have a lot of excellent scenery and bed and breakfasts.
