Ann Starrett Mansion Victorian Bed And Breakfast, Port Townsend, Washington
"A Vacation with a sense of History is a Vacation with Romance"
Just as the Taj Mahal was built for love so was this Mansion. In the magical year of 1889 George Starrett built this Mansion as a wedding present for his Wife Ann. Today this Bed and Breakfast is international renowned not only as a Bed and Breakfast but also for it's classic, stickstyle Victorian architecture, frescoed ceilings and a free hung three-tiered spiral staircase (the construction technique remains a mystery!), leading to one of the most unusual frescoed domned ceilings in North America. The eight sided dome is actually a glorified solar calendar. Four nymphs painted in Ann's image depict the Four Seasons and Four Virtues. On the first day of each season the sun shines thru a ruby red glass and casts a red beam on the appropiate seasonal panel. In Victorian days, the scantily clad nymph in the winter panel caused a mild scandal.
The inside of the mansion is exquisitely detailed with an elaborate freeze, colored stained glass and moldings featuring carved lions, doves and ferns. Guests relax amid Victorian splendor; no room is the same -- all are decorated with antiques collected to re-create a romantic Victorian past just for you.
