Windy Hill Acres Inn, Cobden, Illinois
Southern Illinois Inn in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest
The Inn is a Rock Potato House built in the 1800's. The Potato House was used to "kiln dry" the farmers'sweet potatoes until they were ready to be shipped to market in Chicago.
In the 1950s, the present owner's father built a family home on the property, but did not have any plans for the old Potato House. However, his daughter who had recently married thought the Potato House would make a beautiful home. The Potato House was remodeled into a 3 room house, later a bathroom was added, and in the 1960s 2 more rooms were added. It was their home until 2003.
The Potato House resembles a cottage you would see in the English countryside. Many flowers, native trees, and shrubs surround the cottage. It is a wonderful place to view the countryside and enjoy the birds and wildlife from the deck while you are enjoying a continental breakfast.
